As yoga has been very popular in the US and especially LA (which has the highest density of yoga studios per square meter on earth) and with Hollywood nearby it is only fitting that the rich and the famous are doing yoga as well.

There is an impressive amount of celebrities doing yoga these days, but we will focus our top 5 that inspire us the most.

1. Madonna

Madonna tops them all when it comes to celebrities doing yoga. She started in 1996 after the birth of her daughter and even made a record called Shanti/Ashthangi on her Ray of Light album with the Ashtanga Yoga mantra that is traditionally chanted before class. However at some point she stopped doing yoga and started training with personal trainer Tracy Anderson. New reports have been saying that Madonna started her yoga practice again in combination with other sports and is feeling better than ever at the age of 50. As she said herself in her appearance at Oprah:

“Yoga is a metaphor for life. You have to take it really slowly. You can’t rush. You can’t skip to the next position. You find yourself in very humiliating situations, but you can’t judge yourself. You just have to breathe, and let go. It is a workout for your mind, your body and your soul.”

2. Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus the girl who shakes things up is in fact an ashtangi. She has said in interviews that ashanta yoga is not only her favorite exercise but the closest thing to religion to her. She frequently posts photos and videos of her practice on her Instagram channel and is very advanced in her practice.  “Gotta do yoga not for my body but for my mind!”  “DO YOGA or GO CRAZY”. Cyrus captioned one of her videos.

3. Russell Simmons

Russell Simmons is the founder of Def Jam records and Phat Farm clothing and I did not know he was a yogi and meditator before researching this arcticle. He even has written a book about it: Success Through Stillness: Meditation Made Simple. He contributes his success to meditating twice a day and says it will make you a happier person to do so too.

4. Robert Downey Jr.

Everyone knows that Robert Downey Jr. was not always living the healthiest life. But he made an amazing comeback after being arrested on drug charges. He cleaned up his act and started in the Iron man movies which brought him back on the big screen. He has admitted that one of things to stay away from the addiction is practicing yoga!

5. Christy Turlington

Christy Turlington is one of those woman who seems to have it all. She was a super model when she was younger and now at age 44 is back in the modelling business with an amazing body. Christie is well known for being a yogi for many years already. She practices multiple styles of yoga but admits that its not only about the asanas (the physical postures). For her yoga is daily living. She says:

“There are always challenges. As a parent, I can get so frustrated. Any parent can! But then my yoga that day is parenting. It’s learning patience.”
