SUP is the new thing if you like yoga. I’m sure you have seen it on Instagram at pages like yoga_girl, the breathtaking pictures of people doing yoga on a surfboard in beautiful turquoise water.
Yoga and surfing have been two very complementary disciplines for some time already. Surfers have been doing yoga and yogis feel very attracted to surfing. Since the appearance of Stand Up Paddle it looks like they are inseparable.
So what is this SUP Yoga?
The idea is to do a yoga session on water, balanced on the paddle surf board. The water provides more instability to make your yoga practice more intense than normally lying on the floor. The idea is not to practice complex postures to perfection but to focus on balance. The moving surface of the water results in a more comprehensive, intensive and deep muscle work.
SUP Yoga is based on Hatha Yoga movements for its intensity, mixed with Vinyasa Yoga for the synchronization of movement and breathing.
It is recommended to start on a lake or a calm sea, current and wind are already complicated to manage at first, better to avoid the waves. A paddle-board is wide and voluminous. Nevertheless, for your convenience at the start, you can use an anchor that will allow a little more stability and will prevent you from drifting.
This practice of SUP Yoga is something new for experienced yogis. Apart from the pleasure to intensify your yoga practice, it provides a wonderful connection with nature. And to breathe the fresh air rather than the confined air of a yoga room is definitely more beneficial.
The rocking of the waves and the contact with the water will give you a great serenity and exceptional relaxation.
